Likeness or Bust for TV Fans

We’ve all seen false advertising, like a picture of a Big Mac not all falling apart with the shredded lettuce drooping out the side with the special sauce, but none affects fandom like the conceptual sketches for collectibles.  As of recent years, the tv character mini-bust has become increasingly popular? well at least increasingly produced and is the greatest offender.  The people at DC Unlimited have released these images to get the fans salivating over the new TrueBlood mini-busts.

tbfig3Don’t get your hopes up too high TrueBlood fans, the odds of these turning out like you hope they will are slim to none.  First, we should notice that the actors faces are photoshopped onto the bodies.  I am impressed with the stands and the poses they’ve chosen.  Sometimes generic character poses are better in this medium than still shots from actual film. (like the Dean Winchester busts)

As the fever of television fandom grows, or resurfaces, the appearance of merch is unavoidable.  I just wish the people who insist on making these items would stop to watch the shows first, or at least look at a photograph.  I have yet to see a very good bust of a television character.  Need some examples?  Lets try these on for size:

One thing you can always be sure of is the cool factor on items like this of the non-human nature.  It’s a lot easier to get the likeness of a robot or something as awesome as the Merlotte’s sign, while often more expensive, they’re usually a better bet.
