Most people seem to have taken Chuck disappearing to mean he was God. I’d think his love of prostitutes would rule him out as God, but in case that isn’t enough allow me to make a counterpoint: Chuck was Kripke’s avatar in the SPN-verse, and his disappearance was indicative of Kripke stepping down as showrunner now that he’s shared his story with us. Also, I now just assume that Kripke loves hookers.

I kinda wanted to bitch about Cas returning just to fix up Dean and resurrect Bobby being an obvious deus ex machina in order to keep Cas and Bobby around for a 6th season, but Cas said it was God who brought him back, so…. I guess they already recognized it as deus ex machina.

One thing that I’m glad about was that my prediction of who would die didn’t come to pass. See, for weeks I’ve been convinced that the Impala would be destroyed sticking Lucifer back in his cage, and the opening of the ep just cemented my opinion. Needless to say, I was relieved.

Other than that, it was a great finale, a great end to an era, and can I just say how awesome is Mark Pellegrino? Playing Lucifer on SPN and Jacob on Lost, pretty much opposites and yet he’s somehow perfect for both. Hopefully these two roles help him get some more recognition, I’d love to see him starring in something.

Thanks for five awesome years Kripke,
-Jerk

DB here, back again with another pre-game before the SPN season 5 finale episode “Swan Song”. Such an apt title. Aside from it being a Zeppelin reference, we know what a Swan Song is in general but lets get more technical:

The phrase “swan song” is a reference to an ancient belief that the Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is completely mute during its lifetime until the moment just before it dies, when it sings one beautiful song.

By extension, “swan song” has become an idiom referring to a final theatrical or dramatic appearance, or any final work or accomplishment. It generally carries the connotation that the performer is aware that this is the last performance of his or her lifetime, and is expending everything in one magnificent final effort. (wiki)

While this episode isn’t the end of Sam and Dean, it may well be the end of the show we know and love. Yes, I’m being over dramatic. I’m being that fan girl who wasn’t so sure about bringing two girls into the show, or what that weird ‘ghostfacers’ thing was going to be all about but through all these years the one thing that has always held my trust was Kripke. If you’ve followed us here at JDB for the past year and a half, you’ll have seen that we constantly put our faith in Kripke to see us through and always come out just a little better than we were before. Yes, some of that has to do with Jensen, but a lot of it has to do with the strong creative vision and control of Mr K.

This shall truely be Kripke’s Supernatural swan song and I trust him to bring us a performance of a lifetime. I know he’ll go on to to other amazing things but this is the end of the road for Kripke’s Supernatural.

This thought has been looming over me for weeks. It bothers me so much. I wish the CW could have kept their mouths shut about the renewal till say.. 10 pm tonight. I think I would be watching it on a whole other level if I could truly believe that this could be the end, the boys could lose and the heartbreaking end of the series that I’ve been waiting for in that ‘I hope tomorrow never comes’ kinda way could actually happen.

I trust so much that Sera Gamble et all will do an amazing job with season six. It’s mostly for the same reasons I trust tonight to be fantastic. I trust Kripke and I trust him to see the show off in the hands of great people. Also, Sera has written some of my most favorite episodes of all time.

So take a deep breath SPN fans! I’m expecting tears, blood and enough questions to fill the summer hiatus.

I’m a little disappointed that it ended up being this week, which doesn’t have as much hype as some weeks. There’s the return of Glee and the new Dr Who but otherwise, SPN’s big day kinda feels like it’s just sliding in half unnoticed. The lead up in the show has been steady and good but I find myself tiring with the premise. It’s time for the show to move on. I know we’ve only got a few more weeks and I have no doubt they’ll blow my mind but I’m almost as ‘over it’ as Dean. We’ve spent two years doing this lead up to the end and the past five years with Dean holding his righteousness over Sammy. Maybe I’m letting my weakness for TeamSam show but I need to be wowed. We’ll see if tonight brings the punch.

Tonight’s director, while I sorta expected Kripke is Philip Sgriccia who has a solid background of directing great episodes on this show, though I do think you’d be hard pressed to pick out 5 bad episodes in the entire series. His past work includes Hollywood Babylon, The kids are alright, Jus in Bello and the beloved Ghostfacers ep. And the writer Jeremy Carver gave us A Very Supernatural Christmas and Changing Channels. So there’s no doubt this will be one for the books. I’m really looking forward to some real character and plot progression tonight.

We’ve talked before about how unlucky Tess Mercer’s life has been. I mean she’s really had a hard go with the abusive father and living in a shack without schooling and then getting stranded on that island with the always topless millionaire playboy Oliver Queen only to later take over a huge corporation, even though we’d never heard tell of her before…

All that considered, I’ve always thought of her as a tough bitch and a smart one at that. She figured out Clark’s secret. Something it took even Lionel and Lex years to do. She’s sleepin with Zod and a member of a major spy-ish agency. Tess Mercer is not dumb. Why then are we expected to believe she never once guessed that Oliver Queen is Green Arrow?

Lois knows, hell, pretty much everybody knows. He doesn’t hide it all that well. Also, let’s not forget the fact that she dated him, loved him and spent all that time on that island with him where he taught himself to be a fricken sweet arrow..er. I just don’t believe she was ever that stupid.

I don’t believe any of what she’s come up with, sort of like how I don’t believe that Olive and Chloe are all awesome about being together or not being together. Somebody should have a problem with this. Somebody other than me.

It’s kinda like a small town. Eventually everybody ends up related because you run out of people. Time + few people/characters = incest – in a ..non-Supernatural kinda way. Speaking of Ye Ole SPN, I see Smallville pulling a lot of trademark SPN moves in the past few years. Like perhaps the network is pushing them to work their fandom in the same way, and it’s just not working. For example, the fanservice which Smallville continuously falls on its face while doing. On Supernatural, the fans at the convention help save the day and or hook up with the prophet Chuck. On Smallville the fans pose in costumes with Lois and then are never really seen from again unless to be mocked for their forum love and shipping. This week we saw them try to pull off the Heart to Heart that we see at the end of pretty much every ep of SPN. It just falls flat the same way Lana did – and I’m not talking about her chest.

Linking all this back to Tess, the big “I’m so sorry, forgive me” theme of tonight’s episode “Checkmate” doesn’t work on me anymore and to be honest it’s starting to wear on me on SPN too. It’s time somebody mans up and grabs their destiny by the balls. I wanna see some saving that doesn’t include a hero in danger.

Would/Could Sam and Dean ever leave a town with a supernatural event/being be if it wasn’t really hurting anyone?

Is there a time and a place where that would be alright or are things so black and white that they have to kill everything? Is this too obvious? If the perfect situation came up, like a cat de-clawed, do you think they could let it be?

If you’re too lazy to watch the quick clip he basically goes on about how season 6 of Supernatural will happen, only if the fans want it. Do we want more? Probably but to say that the majority of fandom is in support of season 6 seems a little off to me. This is from the 100th Episode party which happened only a few weeks ago, just before the announcement that it would be renewed. Maybe there was just a lot of wine going around.

I’m not going to drag out all the reasons why this is or is not a good idea but I’d love a show of hands that if you had been asked, what would you say?

I’ve had an interesting problem with blogging this year, and after it popped up again as I was trying to make a post about the Leverage finale, I decided to just turn the problem itself into a ranty post, so here we are.

As a blogger of fine televisionals, there are two things that are my bread and butter: things I can bitch about, and things I can speculate on. So if a show is really good and lacking in mysteries, well that kinda sucks. Like for example, the Leverage finale. It was damn good, wrapped everything up, and provided a great ending point for the second season. Which… doesn’t give me a lot to work with, outside of a straight up recap/review of the episode.

Last season, Supernatural gave us plenty to blog about: where the boys’ relationship was going/how they’d reconcile, and then some NewRuby bitching. This season, well there was speculation about the Colt, but overall it’s just been solid storytelling and entertainment, week in, week out.

‘But Jerk,’ you say; ’surely Heroes gave you something to bitch about!’ Well, yes. But at the end of the day, the scope and consistency of the problems didn’t really change over the course of the season. So, everything we said in the fall was still relevant last month.

It seems strange to complain about shows being good, and I really can’t complain about things I like being well made, even if it makes the blogging more difficult.

What’s required, I believe, is a paradigm shift. A Third Pillar of TV bloging is required, and I’m going to attempt to find one.

-Jerk

If you’d asked me… well yesterday, what I thought the future held for the CW’s two big genre shows, it would have been an easy question to answer: Smallville coming back next season is a lock, and Supernatural depends completely on their ability to come up with a good storyline, now that everything that’s been going on for the last five years is ending. So needless to say, it was a bit surprising to find out that SPN got the early renewal, and Smallville didn’t.

First, Supernatural. I don’t have a lot to say here, really. I honestly didn’t (and still don’t) see how you can follow up DEFEATING SATAN, and I also don’t see how the boys can pull that off without one or both of them winding up dead. More dead than they normally end up, I mean. But I trust Kripke, and Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund and the rest of the SPN creative staff. I trust them to be awesome, and to not move forward with something that’s less-than-awesome. So I’ll wait and see what they bring to the table in the fall.

Now, Smallville. First of all, from what I’ve read it’s the standard cost-to-ratings ratio that’s got the CW questioning bringing Smallville back, and they’ll most likely wait to see if any of their pilots seem like they’d be more viable. So Smallville needs to lower costs, and the quickest way to do that is to thin out the cast. Zod? He’s been pretty lame and will most likely end up dead in the season finale anyway. Chloe? She’s doing pretty much nothing and can easily be replaced with Dr. Gaeta if Clark needs some tech/science wizardry. Plus, like Mack’s going to stick around when she’s got nothing to do. Ollie? Showing up a couple times a season is fine, but full episodes of Smallville should not be revolving around Green Arrow.

I say cut the main cast back to Clark, Lois and Tess, and introduce some more recurring characters at the Daily Planet (also, seeing Clark/Lois/both actually doing some reporting would be nice). I’d suggest throwing in Steve Lombard and maybe Cat Grant. Won’t that turn Smallville into Lois & Clark? Well… yes, but what else can they do at this point?

-Jerk

1.) Our first resolution was not to be too upset if Dollhouse get’s the axe. I think we held our own with this one, considering we didn’t even blog about it. DB didn’t even make it through the whole season watching the show even with the help of almost the entire BSG cast. We’ll probably pick this one up on dvd, eventually

2.) We resolved to try and post about Heroes less. I think we’ve managed to do that somewhere between the massive suck and the good-but-not-really-noteworthy-ness of the show over the past year there’s been a whole lot less to say, especially since it’s come back this fall. Heroes is still on my must watch list but it’s another one I wouldn’t be too sad to see it go in 2010.

3.) We resolved to pimp Leverage more. In 2008 we posted about leverage 8 times, and of the total 41 posts that means we’ve devoted 33 posts to our love of the bad guys turned good. You can expect even more of this to come as the second season returns in less than two weeks and season 3 will begin filming in Feb for us to hopefully see at least half of in 2010.

4.) We resolve to try and not have too many BSG spoilers on our front page. Considering we outed some cylons and some deaths on our frontpage just last week, maybe we’re not so great at holding this promise but you should get off your ass and watch one of the greatest pieces of television our generation will see, already. Kapiche?

5.) MORE JENSEN! Who doesn’t need more Jensen? I maybe forgot about this one as the year dragged on but I never really forget about Jensen. I say we push this one over into next year too. MORE JENSEN! I guess the question for next year will be: will we see more of Jensen and Supernatural come fall?

6.) We resolved to not be too caught up in The Welling Effect which is all the hype surrounding the future of Smallville. Honestly, I’m to the point that I don’t really care. I’m pretty sure the show will see season 10 and we all know the ending is going to fade off into the distance. There’s no real shocker to be found here. Nobody watching Smallville is wondering what will happen in the end but I’m pretty happy with what they’re up to in the mean time. Question for 2010: will they kill off Chloe by the end of this season or let her ride off into the sunset?

7.) Lastly we resolved to make JDB better and easier to navigate which I hope we’ve done. We moved to the dot-com, added a Twitter and more ways to contact us. If you’ve got questions or suggestions hit us up at jerk or db @jerkdoublebitch.com, in comments or via our twitter @jerkdoublebitch

Here’s to another year of good predictions and MORE JENSEN!
